Since 1946, the professionals at Quigley-Smart have been providing quality heating, air conditioning, and plumbing services to Beloit, Janesville, and the surrounding areas. Our reputation for quality work and reliable service has followed throughout our long history.
Originally located at 611 2nd Street, the business was first founded in 1944 as the Quigley-Woods Company. In 1946, Jack Smart bought out his stepfather and began a new partnership with his uncle, Ray Quigley Sr., founding the Quigley Smart Company we know today.
Throughout the years, Jack performed furnace installations, service work, and more. In more recent years, Jack focused on commercial design and estimating, as well as corporate management. Eventually, Jack became chairman of the board.
By 1948, Quigley Smart had moved to our current location at 1344 Madison Rd. Soon after, the business expanded into the plumbing industry. Jack’s brother Robert Smart joined the company, focusing on plumbing and heating installations, and retiring in 1991 after more than 40 years with the family business.
True to the family tradition, Jack’s wife Meta even got into the business, working in our corporate office as both dispatcher and bookkeeper. Eventually, Meta also became vice president of the corporation.
In 1959 Arne Pederson joined Quigley Smart as a service technician and sales rep. After decades of devoted service to the company, Arne became president of the corporation and general manager, all while remaining a heating/air conditioning sales rep.
Dennis Craddick joined the company in 1969. 10 years later, he became manager of the new store at 600 East Memorial in Janesville. Dennis later became secretary and treasurer, as well as heating/air conditioning sales rep in the Janesville area.
